Universities which require you to apply to them directly for Medical Entry

So you’ve navigated through UCAT and now it’s time to take a breather. Right? Well, yes, but you also need to get organised and prepare for applications to medical and dental schools.
The application process to study medicine or dentistry can seem complicated and convoluted, especially if you are applying to multiple universities across multiple states (which MedEntry strongly recommends you do). You may be wondering who and where you need to apply. This blog outlines what you need to know.
Most medical and dental schools require you to apply through their state based tertiary admission centres:
- NSW/ACT: Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)
- VIC: Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC)
- QLD: Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC)
- SA/NT: South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC)
- WA: Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC)
- TAS : Directly to the University of Tasmania
Applications close in late September each year.
However, it is important to realise that some universities also require you to apply directly to the university. These include:
Medicine:
- University of New South Wales: you will need to answer a few questions provided by the university and then submit your application online.
- James Cook University: In addition to applying to QTAC, applicants need to apply online directly to JCU via the online application link
- University of Newcastle/New England
- La Trobe (pathway program). You may need to submit a rurality form.
- Curtin University: rural applicants must complete the Rural entry application form which must be submitted directly to the university.
- University of Auckland (New Zealand)
- University of Otago (New Zealand)
Dentistry:
- James Cook University: In addition to applying to QTAC, applicants need to apply online directly to JCU via the online application link, you will need to answer a few questions provided by the university and then submit an application form.
- University of Otago (New Zealand)
The information above applies to ‘standard’ applicants (usually those who are currently in year 12 or on a gap year). If you are a ‘non-standard’ applicant, the application process may be different.
Non-standard applicants include:
- Those who are not in their final year of high school or on gap year in Australia or New Zealand
- Those who are not in their first year of university in New Zealand
If you fall into the non-standard applicant category, please read our blog which outlines which universities you can apply to.
To ensure you give yourself the best chance of being successful in your medical applications, it is important to get organised! Make a list of all the medical / dental schools you want to apply to, and beside each university make a note or whether you need to apply to the tertiary admissions centre alone, or the tertiary admissions centre and the university. Ensure you include important dates into your calendar and start thinking about medical interview preparation!
