Which Universities and Courses Require UCAT?

6 months ago by Rob

UCAT stands for University Clinical Aptitude Test. UCAT is required for entry into most medicine and dentistry courses across Australia and New Zealand. If you wish to apply for such courses in 2026, you will need to sit UCAT in 2025.

UCAT will take place across the months of July and August in 2025. UCAT results are valid for one year only and cannot be carried over from one year to the next. This blog outlines and classifies the universities and courses requiring UCAT.

Graduate and Non-Standard Entry Courses requiring UCAT

Some universities also require students to sit UCAT if they are non-standard applicants (i.e., candidates in the process of studying a degree) or graduates (i.e., those who have already completed a degree). Other universities require graduates to sit GAMSAT.

This table outlines graduate and non-standard entry courses requiring UCAT:

University Course or programme
Curtin University Current Curtin university students have the option to switch into the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course. To switch into this course, students must:
  • Complete at least 200 credits with a minimum course weighted average of 80% or higher and have a minimum of 200 credits remaining in the course at the end of the year preceding admissions
  • Sit the UCAT ANZ test
  • Sit the Casper test
  • Met the Chemistry ATAR (at least 60% in CHEM1003 and; at least 60% in CHEM1007 or 60% in CHEM1001)

Applicants who have completed a tertiary qualification and are not currently studying a higher education course at another provider/university must:

  • Achieve a notional ATAR of at least 92 (determined by Curtin)
  • Sit the UCAT ANZ test
  • Meet the Chemistry ATAR
The University of New South Wales

Graduate Entry into the Bachelor of Medical Studies(BMed)/Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is restricted to domestic UNSW Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSci) students. To be eligible, students must:

  • Complete all 16 core courses of the BMedSci program by the end of year 2
  • Achieve at least the 50th percentile (overall score excluding SJT) in UCAT during year 2 of the BMedSci program and complete medical interview

The University of Newcastle / University of New England

Entry into Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine can be based on UCAT plus Selection Rank based on equivalent previous Year 12 studies or Higher education qualifications.

Western Sydney University

Entry into the Doctor of Medicine requires UCAT plus an ATAR or equivalent of at least 95.5 (93.5 for applicants from Western Sydney and rural students) for those with an incomplete degree. For those who have commenced or finished a university degree, the GPA requirements vary depending on GWS status, the type of degree and how much of the degree you have completed.

University of Auckland

There are two application categories for entry into the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery:

  • First Year BHSc/BSc (Biomedical Science): entry is based on a GPA, according to rank order across all 8 first year courses with no fails, UCAT and interview
  • Graduate entry: Degree, postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma completed normally in the minimum academic time from a New Zealand university, within five years of the date of application, with a minimum Grade Point Average of 6.0 (B+) or equivalent, plus interview and UCAT

University of Otago

Entry into the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Dental Surgery:

  • Usually through the Health Sciences First Year course with a minimum of 65% in the applicant's best seven papers, plus UCAT.
  • For graduates, applicants must have completed, normally in the minimum academic time and within three years of the date of application, the requirements of a degree from a New Zealand university with a minimum waighted GPA of 5.0; plus UCAT. (Check the Otago website for details of admission scores for degrees.)

Undergraduate Medical & Dental Courses NOT requiring UCAT

A minority of universities offer entry into medicine and dentistry directly from year 12 without UCAT. This table outlines them:

University

Course or programme

Bond University

Bachelor of Medical Studies (BMedSt) Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program

Note: Bond is a private university. Entry is based on ATAR, the Bond Psychometric Test, and an interview

James Cook University

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) & Bachelor of Dental Surgery

Entry is based on ATAR, a written application, and an interview (favours those from rural or remote backgrounds)

La Trobe University

Bachelor of Dental Science / Master of Dentistry

Oral Health Science

UCAT is not required for Year 12 students; entry is based on ATAR

The University of Melbourne

Doctor of Medicine (‘Guaranteed’ Entry Pathway = 3 years Bachelor’s degree + 4 years Doctor of Medicine)

Entry is based on an ATAR of 99.9+, completing a degree with a weighted average mark of 75%, plus interview.

The University of Sydney

Doctor of Medicine / Doctor of Dental Medicine (‘Guaranteed Entry Pathway’ = 3 years Bachelor’s degree + 4 years Doctor of Medicine/Dental Medicine)

Entry is based on an ATAR of 99.95 (slightly lower for pathways applicants), a written assessment plus interview and completing a degree with an annual average mark of at least 65.0 in each year of study.

Griffith University

Provisional entry into the Griffith Doctor of Medicine program (School leavers)

Entry based on ATAR of 99.80+

Completion of the Bachelor of Medical Science program with a GPA of at least 5.0 (raised to 5.5 for students commencing in 2025) will see graduates gain entry into the Doctor of Medicine.

Completion of a bachelor or other key degree with a GPA of at least 5.0 (5.5) and GAMSAT (graduate entry)
Note: A key degree is a bachelor degree, honour degree, masters (coursework / research) or a PHD.

For admission commencing Trimester 1, 2025, the Overall Score from UCAT ANZ, if available, will be used for tiebreakers within an ATAR band. Applicants without a UCAT ANZ result will still be considered for selection but will be ranked at the bottom of their ATAR band.

As you can see, UCAT is required for the vast majority of undergraduate medical and dental courses across Australia and New Zealand. Some universities also require UCAT for entry into graduate and non-standard entry pathways. A minority of universities do not require UCAT for entry, and these often have unusual requirements (e.g., rural focus for James Cook, high ATAR requirements for Melbourne/Sydney, significant fees for Bond university).

Therefore, if you are aiming to study medicine or dentistry in Australia, you should sit UCAT!
